![]() ![]() A quick google search says that average life expectancy in the UK was ~77 in 1995. A healthy muggle could live up to a hundred or more under the right circumstances, but a healthy wizard can live for multiple centuries. This isn't just chance or better health, either. There's also the evidence that wizards and witches tend to have longer lifespans than muggles, even without magical helpers, like alchemy or horcruxes. Like how Hagrid acted as if a car crash could never kill two of the most talented wizards of their age, even though car crashes are among the most deadly things in the world, statistically speaking. In addition to what others are saying, I think wizards are just all around "tougher" than the average muggle. (2) - Would the first (or at anytime) reaction of a wizard/witch to a guy with a gun really be the killing curse? There are plenty of good defensive spells, right? Of course, if you imagine kind of a Braveheart-like battle where people with guns are rushing at people with wands across a plain battlefield, the magical folk would fare badly. (1) - For all of these, I have imagined a kind of cop-criminal standoff like in the movies (Thomas and Martha Wayne's encounter with Joe Chill would be a good example) where the participants are ready but no one is shooting. Because the person with their finger on the trigger is looking at your wand.Ĭan Avada Kedavra be used non-verbally? Because then, the magical folk have bit of an edge. How much do you need to swish your wand for the Avada Kedavra? Is it like some incredibly bizarre dance move like in the movies or like a lazy flick (as I always imagined someone like Severus would do). Is the shooter some kind of an American Wild West gunslinger, who can take out their gun (maybe from a holster as well) and shoot in the blink of an eye? But, at the same time, we would also need to consider the following. I think bullets would be faster than spells. I kind of always thought of wizards and witches to be similar to Quicksilver from the X-Men - you know, like how in Days of Future Past, he (seemingly) slowed down time and calmly changed the path of incoming bullets, while listening to a song! But of course, that's wishful thinking. Also, we mainly get the POV of fighting from Harry and I think Death Eaters were ordered not to kill Harry so that may be another reason they weren't using it a lot. I agree it may not always be effective and that is a good reason not to use it a lot, I think they have to think about the possibility of it rebounding on them too so maybe stupefy etc is better in some situations. I seem to remember green light being fired at Dumbledore during the duel at the MoM and I don't recall Voldemort saying AK out loud, but who knows what the spell was. I don't remember AK being only verbal, but like I said I'm due a reread. I don't remember Harry mentioning any adverse affect when using Imperio a lot at Gringotts but maybe that's separate from Crucio and AK. I think Bellatrix uses Crucio a lot on Hermione in Malfoy Manor but she's a very powerful witch so that may not be the norm. In the movies it's constant but I don't think that's true for the books. I'm trying to think back but I can't quite recall from the books how often powerful spells are fired off.
